When people normally think about kitchen backsplash options, they will typically think about ceramic tile or stone tile materials. While this is a popular choice that can add color and texture to a kitchen, there are other options that work as well and offer a distinctive look.
If you are on a tight budget and am looking for a traditional look, painted bead board paneling is one option to consider. Bead board comes in a variety of materials; MDF is an economical choice and takes a painted finish quite well. I would only use this material on walls that will not be exposed to moisture. The area behind a sink may not be a good location, however if you have a typical 4″ backsplash of tile, laminate, or granite immediately above the countertop, then I would not hesitate to use bead board for the remainder of the wall area, up the bottom of the upper cabinets.
Another possible choice for backsplash material is sheet metal -either stainless steel or galvanized iron. This is easily installed with construction adhesive and results in a modern looking finish that is visually striking.
The possible choices for kitchen a back splash is only limited by one’s imagination. While tile remains a strong option, it does require a fair degree of skill level to install and depending on the material selected, can be on the expensive side. When considering backsplash materials do not forget about sheet materials such as bead board and sheet metal-they offer a unique look at a bargain price.
