The flu has taken up residency in our house for the past week. It has been the most miserable, horrible and down right dreadful week I have ever lived through and I never want a repeat of this situation as long as I live.
It all started with a call at noon from the school nurse saying my daughter was not feeling well and needed to go home. I got to her as quickly as possible, took her home and put her right to bed. I immediately assumed the worst and wondered if she had the Swine Flu. I called the doctor and described her symptoms. She told me what to watch for and gave me her cell number. I did not intend to take this lightly or let it get out of control.
I switched from mom mode to nurse mode administering medications to reduce her fever, help her body aches, sooth her sore throat and control her cough. I set up the humidifier, made chicken noodle soup, hot jello water and loaded the DVD with her favorite movie. I then switched back to mom mode and snuggled into sooth her.
By the afternoon my son came home from soccer practice with the same symptoms as his sister and within the hour my husband was home from work looking like something the cat had dragged in. I stood there wondering how was I ever going to keep up and what if my other two kids or myself came down with this.
I had to stop the spread of this gomboo before it was too late. I knew there were a million surfaces that had become breading grounds for germs that were going to make everyone else sick. Fortunately I have a steam cleaner that gives me the power to stop the spread of these germs dead in their tracks.
I love my steamer for many reason but especially for this situation because I find using chemicals, germicides and disinfectants less tolerable than the germs I’m trying to kill. I don’t want to come down with the flu but I also don’t want red itchy eyes, the skin on my hands so dry it cracks or lungs burned by chemical fumes.
I plugged my steamer in and prepared myself for a steam cleaning marathon. I sent each patient to their room with strict instructions to stay there. They did have authorization to use the bathroom facilities but the rest of the house was off limits until they were no longer contagious.
Even though I had a big job ahead of me I was so grateful to have my steam cleaner, it’s so easy and efficient that I knew sanitizing all the different surfaces would be a breeze. I left it plugged in all day so I could follow behind each sick person as the made their way to the only other designated room the were allowed to visit.
I sanitized all the door knobs, faucet handles, light switches, cabinet and refrigerator handles, stairway handrails, telephone and any other gadget those germ covered fingers may have touched. I sanitized the trash can where they tossed their snotty tissues.
Second I attached the diamond brush with a cloth and began to sanitize and disinfect all the surfaces in the kitchen like counter tops, refrigerator front, table and chairs.
I moved to the bathroom and hit the tub, shower, toilet, sink including the faucets and any other surface I could think of that might be harboring germs with enough steam to annihilate whatever was growing there.
I attached the floor brush with a cloth and steam cleaned all the floors. Last but not least I gave the family room a good once over including the TV remote, the sofa and love seat.
For the next few days I continued my steaming process until I was sure my patients were no longer contagious. Then I washed the bedding and steam cleaned the mattresses and pillows. I hit all the tooth brushes with steam every day as well.
I know my efforts were not in vain because neither myself or my other two kids came down with that awful flu bug. The fact that we stayed healthy while the others were so sick I truly attribute to my steamer. Nothing kills germs faster, better or easier than steam.
